It is worth lingering at the beach of Bordeira to appreciate how the sea has carved the sand into harmonious shapes that change with the seasons. This beach, unique and full of recesses, resulted from the interaction of the sediment coming from Monchique, deposits left by sea, the persistent work of wind and the vagaries of the tides and currents.
Carrapateira is a delight for holidaymakers, surfers, hikers, fishermen, perceveiros, biologists … In the dunes, the vegetation is lush: thyme, yellow amaranths, rosemary, lavender, crowberries, blue pimpernel, sea lavender, cistus…
The outline of the cliffs starts to take on new forms since the rock starts becoming limestone, from this point southwards. The limestone dissolves easily in rainwater, which is slightly acidic. Thus the action of sea water, eroding the cliffs from below, combined with the disintegration of the cliff top caused by rain and running water, results in holes, caves, arches and columns of rock.
Materials found within the limestone, which are insoluble, such as red clays, form red deposits which contrast with the whiteness of the calcareous rock.
