On this circuit you can see for yourself the process of dune colonization, from sea level up to the pine forest. By the sea, conditions are rough – strong winds, intense sunlight, poor dry soil and salt deposits. Only real “superheroes of the plant world” can grow in such conditions. Here there are crowberry bushes, globe amaranths, rosemary, thyme, rock roses, Columbian wax weed, juniper and rest harrows.
Heading inland the ruggedness abates and the vegetation starts to increase in height until it reaches the pine forest, which forms the closest line of defence for the local villages. This vegetable army plays its part in mitigating the harshest elements from the proximity of the sea, providing coastal populations and their crops with a gentler and milder environment.
The mouth of the Amoreira river is a paradise for birdwatching. If you are a birdwatcher it is worthwhile lingering by the river mouth, binoculars in hand. In particular watch the areas that are exposed at low tide, the marshes, sand banks and reeds. The endemic plants of this coast, such as Linaria ficalhoana, Biscutella vicentina, Diplotaxis vicentina and Thymus camphorates, are also found in the dunes at the river mouth.
Returning to the Historical Way you can find a variety of wild orchids in the fields and undergrowth during the Spring.
Refreshments along the way
At km 3.5, at Amoreira beach.
Stay one more night in Aljezur
Take the opportunity to do a circular walk, starting and ending in Aljezur. We suggest that you start in Aljezur and follow the Historical Way to the northern starting point of this complementary circuit. When you reach the beach of Amoreira choose between returning along the road or follow the markers and return to Aljezur passing the campsite once again. Both alternatives add up to about 16 km.
Combine this circuit with the Historical Way
When doing the section between Odeceixe and Aljezur, in either direction, take advantage of this complementary circuit to get to know Amoreira beach and to walk along the coast. If you do so, the section will be 23 km.
Another suggestion is a circular walk of 7 km from the beach of Amoreira.
Pedra da Mina (north):
3 km after the village of Rogil, after the main detour to the beach of Carreagem, taking the track on your right.
Close to the Campsite (south):
About 1.2 km after the campsite. On the crossroads between Historical Way and Fishermen’s Trail, go straight ahead, and then take the right way, descending till Amoreira beach.
